Is Climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge Worth It?

Before Kyle and I went to Sydney, Australia last year we knew one thing we had to do was Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge. My grandfather, an Australian, had a fear of heights and we often joked about my love of climbing and scaling all sorts of rocks. For me the climb up to the summit of the Sydney Harbour bridge was more than just a story to tell, it was poignant.

Prior to arriving in Sydney, Kyle and I did not book a climb online. We wanted our trip to not be one that followed a set itinerary. We know of things we wanted to do (e.g., climb the bridge, visit Taronga Zoo, hike the blue mountains), but we wanted to feel free in our exploration. Fortunately, it is not hard to book a climb for the bridge. You can make arrangements through a number of sources. We just so happened to be walking down in the Sydney Harbour Quay and booked our climb through an information booth. I would encourage you to be aware of how much the bridge climb costs before you book through one of the vendors. Fortunately, we knew how much it was and the vendor we bought it through charged a very fair price.

There are a few climb options (e.g., Sampler, Express, Day, Night). We chose to do a day climb, though we had the option to pay a little more for a night climb during Vivid Sydney. We opted for the day climb because we wanted to take in all that we could.

The Climb takes about 3.5 hours, and you will be climbing all of that! There are 1,332 steps and while there are numerous rules and regulations, this climb is beyond worth it.

Fear not!

When you first arrive at the Bridge Climb you have to go through the standard waiver signing process, but from there you are outfitted in a super snazzy outfit. On colder days they may offer a nice warm fleece and they have neck straps for your glasses, should you choose to bring them. On the day of our climb, I chose to take the offered hat and my glasses as it was a very sunny morning.
After you are properly attired, you will go through a drill inside that will help you be prepared for the step and ladders you will be ascending and descending over the next 3 hours. Again, this is nothing to be feared. It truly prepares you.

Forget Your Camera, Phone, and Garmin!

The Bridge Climb facility offers lockers for your personal items, but bear in mind you are not allowed to take cell phones or cameras on this climb. Your tour guide will take nice photos of you, which are available for purchase once your climb is done. To me, the photos were so worth it.

Trust Your Guide and Take In Their Knowledge!

Our Guide was truly fantastic. He was hilarious, personable, and truly knowledgeable about Sydney and it's history. Your guide will communicate with you via headset and along the way, you will stop for a few minutes while he points out history areas and shares the history of Sydney and the bridge. These breaks are awesome when you have been climbing for quite some time.

Have Fun With Your Group!

Our group consisted of another married couple and a dad with his two kids. These five strangers were our friends over the next 3.5 hours. However, if you're not one for groups, don't worry. While you may interact with them over the course of your climb there are points when you get broken apart for photos and you can just speak with your partner. Also, while you are connected via headset, your tour guide is the only one with a microphone, so no one will hear your conversations.

Smile For The Camera!

Take advantage of the photos your tour guide will take. As mentioned before, you don't have your own camera or your cell phone during the climb. Our tour guide also offered a 30-second video clip, which was free and emailed to us shortly after the climb. I love that video so much.

Is The Climb Worth It?

Abso-friggin-lutely! This is a memory Kyle and I will cherish for quite some time. Heck, we'd even do it again on our next trip to Sydney. If you're able to set aside the time, and the money, yes this is truly worth it and an activity I would strongly recommend to anyone visiting Sydney!
